Drayden's Essay of "Dramatic poesy"

 Drayden On Dramatic Poesy

This blog is a task given by Dr. Barad sir. In this blog i am going to point out and discuss Dramatic poesy also going through some important topics, describe in task.

This blog is a response to a task given by dr. Barad sir here is sir's blog-Click here

Essay of Dramatic poesie

'An essay of dramatic poesy' was basically written in 1666 during  the closure of the London theaters due to plague. Generally it is read as a general defense of drama as a legitimate art form and also it takes up where sir philip sidney's " Defence of poesie" left off as well as Drayden's own defense of his literary practices as well.

This essay is basically structured as a dialogue among four friends on the river thames. Here are those four gentlemen-

  1. Eugenius

  2. Crities

  3. Lisideius

  4. Neander

They begin conversation on the subject of poetry, which turns into a debate on the virtues of modern and ancient writers. They discuss dramatic poetry. This is a relatively New genre which had in some ways broken with classical traditions and was thus in need of its own apologia. Then the group arrives  at the definition of drama, French and English drama, and debates over ancient versus modern writers and discusses the value of the "unities" . They also discuss some playwrights such Ben Johnson, moliere, Shakespeare with great insight, and have final debate over the shoot suitability of rhyme to drama.

Here is first question of the task-

Difference between Aristotle's definition of tragedy and Drayden's definition of play.

Here is the definition of tragedy and play by Aristotle and Drayden.

Defination of tragedy by Aristotle-

"A tragedy is the imitation of an action that is serious and also, as having magnitude, complete in itself, in appropriate and pleasurable language. In a dramatic rather than narrative form, with incidents arousing pity and fear, wherewith to accomplish a catharsis of these emotions.

here i found one picture, in this picture there is some important point regarding to Aristotle's defination of poem-

Another definition is…

" The ideal man bears the accident of life with dignity and grace, making the best of circumstances."

Aristotle insists that the principal element in the structure of tragedy is not character but plot. Most important of all Aristotle said, " is the structure of the incidents, for tragedy is an imitation not of men but of an action of life. Here Aristotle agrees that plot is most important in tragedy; he says that plot is the soul of a tragedy, and he puts characters in second place. The most powerful element of tragedy is emotional interest. According to Aristotle in tragedy there were many scenes, and each is most effective when it coincides with the other. For example oedipus.

According to Aristotle-

Tragedy relates the 'sad episodes ' of life. The chief mood of tragedy is sadness. In this way tragedy reflects seriousness.

Complete Action-

Aristotle says that the action of tragedy must be complete. In other words it should have a beginning, middle and end.

Magnitude-

Magnitude means size of length. According to Aristotle tragedy should neither be too long nor too short, but it should be governed by aesthetic pleasure.

Embellishment of language-

Language of tragedy is quite different from the language of the lay man. The  language of tragedy must grant for lofty.

According to Aristotle  every tragedy must have six parts-

  1. Plot

  2. Characters

  3. Diction

  4. Thought

  5. Spectacle

  6. Melody

Aristotle was a great admirer of sophocles "oedipus the king". It is considering the perfect  tragedy, and also his analysis fits that play most perfectly.

Tragedy is the "imitation of an action"  according to " the law of probability  or necessity."

According to Aristotle the medium of tragedy is drama not narrative. Tragedy mainly "shows" rather than "tells".  Aristotle tells tragedy is higher and more philosophical than history simply relates what has happened while tragedy dramatizes what may happen. History deals with the particular, and tragedy with the universal.

Therefore tragedy arouses  not only pity but also fear, because the audience can envision themselves within this cause and effect chain. Audience get connected with this.

Here is definition of play-

Drayden's definition of play-

" just and lively image of human nature. Representing its passions and humors, and the changes of fortune to which it is subject, for the delight and instruction of mankind."

According to the defination, play is an image of 'human nature' and the image is 'just' and 'lively'. By using the word 'just' drayden seems to imply that literature imitates human actions. For Drayden, 'poetic imitation' is different from an exact, servile copy of reality for the imitation is not only 'just' it is also 'lively'.

Here is second question-

If you were supposed to give your personal predilection, would you be on the side of the ancient or modern? Please give reasons.

John Drayden is an English poet, dramatist and critic. He is the most important in literature of the restoration age. His most important prose work "of dramatic poesy, an essay" gives him the reputation as the father of English literary criticism. Drayden represented the conflicting claims of the two sides as debate among four friends, one modernist preferred French drama as Drayden preferred and liked the lifelike drama of English theater to French tragedy.

He includes the five points in this  essay which are as below :

  1. Ancients versus moderns

  2. Unities

  3. French versus English drama

  4. Separation of tragedy and comedy versus Tragicomedy.

  5. Appropriateness of rhyme in drama.

First of all, discussion of ancients and moderns should not be for who is 'better'. It should be more fundamentally about how history itself functioned and should be read thus it should be about the relationship between past and present, humanity and nature and about human understanding and knowledge.

First, if I was supposed to give my personal preference, I would be on the side of the Ancient, because I have some reasons.

Here i describe that.-

The case for the 'Ancients' is  basically presented by 'crites'. In controversy Drayden takes no extreme position, follows the golden mean, and is sensible enough to give the ancients their respect. Means That drayden does not disparage the ancients.

Here cites views on the Ancients:

Mainly crites argues in favour of the ancients because he says that they established the unities the three unities are time, place, action. Some dramatic rules were spelled out by Aristotle which are still now followed by the current and french playwrights.

Crites speaks in defense of ancients and his argument are as below, so let's discuss in detail.

  • The superiority of ancients is established by the very fact that the moderns simply imitate them, built on the foundations laid by them. Ancients are better because they have no models which they follow in giving contributions to improve their writing, seeing the ancient's work.

  • We should remember that,  " Every age has its own genius , its own inclination for some particular branch of knowledge.

The Ancients were genius for drama and in particular a branch of poetry they reached at perfection.

  • Ancient Greece and Rome poetry was more honored than any branch of knowledge. In that time poets were rewarded according to their merits.

"Emulation is the spur of with

, and sometimes envy, sometimes admiration, quickens our endeavors."

Here poets are guided more by malice than by the spirit of virtuous emulation.

  • The ancients drama is superior because the ancients closely observed nature and faithfully represented in their work. By comparison of ancients the moderns do not observe and study nature carefully and so they distort and disfigure her in their plays.

  • The rules of dramatic composition:

  • Which is not followed by moderns dramatist whereas the ancients follows all that rules.

  • Crites makes special mention of the unities of time, place, and action which he says,

" ought to be observed in every regular play."

  • The Ancients followed these rules and the effect is satisfying and pleasing.

The ancients could organize their plays well and from this it follows that they must have also written well. We are unable to appreciate the art and beauty of their language.

Crites also gives the example of the famous playwright Ben Johnson who follows the ancients.

Here is playlist of youtube video's playlist of Dryden's dramatic poesy.

Conclusion-

To conclude I could say that Ancients are superior to modern humans because they closely observe nature and are represented in their work. Ancients are the base of moderns, they are nothing without ancients, drayden favors the modern English plays but does not disparage the ancients, at the end he says that…

' I admire johnson a lot but i love shakespeare."

Shitala Satam - Religious fevour

Thinking activity

Religious fervor and "A tale of tub"

This blog is a thinking activity given by kavisha ma'am, Department of English, mkbu. In this blog i am going to discuss the festival "shitala satam" and describe what is science and myth behind this festival.

Here is blog of  Dilip Barad sir on the topic- Shitala satam- Religion vs Science , inclulation vs vaccination, non acceptance of intellectuals.

Dr.Dilip barad sir's blog

and here is blog of Kavish ma'am on the topic-

"Shitala satam blind faith vs Reasonable daubts.

Shitala satam

In India people celebrate many festivals. Each and every month, year. In India there are many religions and we all live together. Many people blindly believe in religion and follow their rituals without knowing the science behind it. One of the festivals is shitala satam.

Shitala satam is also known as shitala saptami, and this festival is dedicated to goddess shitala sheetala which is also spelt as sheetala.

Devotees of goddess shitala in gujarat state celebrate shitala satam on the saptami tithi, shravan krishna paksha. This is the seventh day in the month of shravan during the warning phase of the lunar cycle. This festival falls one day before janmashtami, this festival is the birth anniversary of shree krishna.

On this festival devotees observe a vrat and follow certain rituals. By fasting, devotees pray tribute to shitala mata.

When we see her pictorial, she was mounted on a donkey. Wearing a garland of neem leaves ,also holding a bunch of neem leaves and carrying a broom in one of her hands. A dustpan and a pot of water on the other hand. Broom and dustpan are symbols of cleanliness, and neem represents healing and last water signifies coolings or life nurturing quality.

Women devotees worship her for the health and long life of their children. This festival occurs in the monsoon season in the western and northern parts of india. Most people avoid cooking fresh food on this day. People prefer consuming simple, non  spicy, cold food prepared on the previous day. This practice guards the digestive system against health troubles.

Here is picture of food plate, there is many food items in this plate which woman makes on shitala satam-

Basically sheetala means cool or cold. Therefore, this vrat is intended for relieving the stomach of all its elements, and people avoid lighting fire on this day to shield themselves from heat. Local belief suggests that goddess sheetla cures heat borne illnesses. Devotees worship this deity to cure diseases like chickenpox, measles and other heat borne diseases.

And now we are going to discuss the perspective of religion vs science.

According to sigmund freud:

"God was an illusion and worshippers were reverting to childhood needs of security and forgiveness."

So, religion played a vital role in shaping human thinking. If there is a question and people can not find an answer then they start connecting it with god. Religion and science are totaly opposite to each other. If there is science there is no religion and if there is religion there isn't science.

Shitala satam vs science-

There is one story behind this festival that, many years ago there is a terrible disease called shitala, and there is no medicine for it so people became restless from the death of this illness and they started to worship this devi named shitala and in the whole year at least one day they eat cold food.

In this festival there is one science behind eating cold food to overcome the deficiency of B12. But that time there is no practice to eat cold food to overcome the deficiency of B12. People do this because of fear of Devi sheetala and after this all there is one research paper done by great scientist Homi k Bhabha that says shitala is the festival to overcome deficiency of B12.

When Edward jenner tried to tell the people that he found a vaccination for this illness he became hatred.. Because he ultimately tried to tell the people that there is nothing like a goddess to cure your disease. So this is how science and religion always stand opposite. But we can say that…

"if there is no religion than there is no science and if there is no science than there is no religion."

Here is one picture which discribes some principles of religion and science  in science we could doubt about things and could ask question, and can search for answer, if we don't know about things than we study about it, look for alternative explanation. This are some science principles and now we look at some  religion's principles religion said that don't doubt things, god is answer of all things and there is no alternative explanation about things. Religion pretand that it knows everything, but that is not entirely true.

This festival has three aspects, here they are-

Religion:

The worshipers observe the customs and practices in the honour of shitala maa, the deity who is known to be the cure of diseases in children and protector of offsprings and childbirth.

Science

The scientific rationale being that the fermented food acts as a probiotic meal which brings about a balance on digestion and strengthens and improves the body's immunity by boosting the gut flora.

And finally palate : who are we kidding, some foods just taste better on the following day..!

We can connect this festival with the book " The myth of Sisyphus " which is an essay written by Albert Camus in 1942.

The myth of sisyphus

This essay is influenced by philosophers such as Soren Kierkegaard,Arthur Schopenhauer and Friedrich Nietzsche, Camus introduces his philosophy of the absurd here.

This Absurd lies in the juxtaposition between the fundamental human need to attribute meaning to life and the "unreasonable silence" of the universe in response.

In the last chapter of this essay, Camus compares the absurdity of man's life with the situation of Sisyphus, a figure of Greek mythology who was condemned to repeat forever the same meaningless task of pushing a boulder up a mountain, only to see it roll down again. The essay concludes " The struggle itself.. Is enough to fill a man's heart, one must imagine sisyphus happy."

Jonathan swift - A tale of tub

There is one satirist Jonathan swift who written many religion works and his novel represent society. Acvording to his writting time sequence, the targets of his ridicule of his became larger and larger, from Roman catholic and Puritans, to the declining christianity, and to all religions in general, which reflects his uncompromising stance as an Enlightener.

"A tale of tub" one of swift's earlist satire works, is a religions allegory. This book exposes the quarreles of the churches in the famoua story of three brothers, peter, martin, and jack.

To conclud, we can say that in india we were celebrates many festivals, "Shitala Satam" is one of it. Many people follow rituals bliendly without knowing anything about it without knowing science behind it. Because of fear of god they follow certain kinds of rituals. In this modern time scientist finds most of solutions of many kind of disease, but many people coundn't trust them they only trust on religion.

Sunday reading : "post - truth"

 Post - Truth

This blog is response about sunday task reading of  " post truth", this task is given by Dr. Barad sir . In this blog i'm going to discuss about what is " post truth" , and given some example of it, and also going to connect this with what is my learning in the workshop on thinking skills.

Write a defination of  "post truth".

Basically a post truth is situation in which people are less influenced by factual information than by their emotions or by beliefs they already believe and hold.

Post truth is basically concern about disputes over public truth claims. This term was used academically and publicly before 2016. Oxford dictionary popularly defined it as-

"Relating to and denoting circumstances in which objective facts are less influential in shaping public opinion than appeals to emotion and personal belief."

This defination is given by Oxford dictionary.

Here is one picture which is related to post truth. Politics deals with public emotions and their personal belief which they hold since vety long time. Simply we can say that politicians are emotionaly blackmailed poeple. Here facts going one side and people feelings going anothor side in politics. polititions are mostly not aware about facts and they just emotionaly trap peoples and play with their emotins.

Upon picture is shows that how people trust blindly  on  social  media, they believe that truth is a conspiracy to keep them in their place. They just ingired truth, they just want to recieve simple answer which are connected with their emotions and sentiments, they don't want to understand complex answer which are correct. Simply we can say that they don't want to apply their mind.

This term was named in Oxford dictionaries " eorld of the year" in 2016. This also known as " post truth politics" and " post truth society".  This " post truth" is specifically connect with 21 century communication and cultural practices.

Many scholars write upon this and this subject is increasing scholarly attention and public debate, this term is mostly associated with some forms like fake or false news, rumors, hoaxes and political lying. Post truth only shares with it a general concern about knowledge, truth, and reality. It is especially studied as a media and communication studied phenomenon with particular form of truth telling.

Dicsuss a few examples of post truth.

Here, i'm going to explain " what is post - truth " or " post truth politics". And share some examples in india, and also describe brief introduction to the journey of humans persuit of truth and knowledge about it.

The history of human civilization, ways of knowing things is too vast. Few things people understand but still many things they didn't. If they can't understant things they attributed it to god and nature.

In this modern time many peoples believe that earth is flat pallat, or why did the earth shake....? God must be angry. People believes that way. In this time religion had been invested and also belief and faith get certain higher order was the basic of knowledge during this time.

Here i share some lies of indian government-

No new cases of covid - 19 after 16 may-

On 24 april, vinod paul, a member of the Niti aayog, and he is chairperson of the national task forse for covid - 19. He presented a slide that clsimed that the number of new coronavirus cases would drop to about a thousand by 10 may, and that india would see no more new cases after 16 may, and also paul said that " no need to fear of hidden spike in # covid cases. The disease is in control."  His models predicted that the cases would peak at just above 1500 cases a day.

This is not only claim but rubbish thing by several members of another group which created the central government to advise the covid - 19 responce. This proved false. On may 10, indias had started growing at a rate if 5000 a day and reached 10,000 by the june.

The government is announcing a 20 lakh crore package for covid relief:

On 13 may, prime minister modi said  " the economic package that is being announce tiday. If added, comes to around rs20lakh crores, this oackage is about ten percent of india's GDP with this various sections of the country and those linked to economic system will get support and strength of 20 lakh crore rupees."

This economic package was annouced by modi and nirmala sitaraman the union finance minister. This types of several annoncements was a part of packege, which were already in the pipeline before the covid -19 pendamic. This type of many announcements were proven sometiomes half truth or sometimes totaly lies.

Here i share some pictures which i took from facebook page-

In this Raghuram rajan said that " This government believes only those who are right, who apploud him, rest are wrong."

Bassicaly he says that modi sarkar always believe those peoples who apploud his goverment not those people who are actualy right and have logical, knowledgeable opinion. Mostly those people apploud him who are his goverements member.

Here i share anothor picture-

Here we get to khow that pm doesn't khow about what is the number of position of india in economy country.  He should know about it, but he shoundn't.

So we could say that in india there were many politions who were not studied, many times they don't have knowledge about what are they saying. They give statment without knowing things. Most of they tells lies to get vote of people.  Sometimes they emotionally trap people and win the vote. They are just playing with peoples fealings they don't care about their fealings.

We teach many things in thinking skill workshop of milan panya sir. we learned that

"if something is true what else has to ne true"

We are human being and we are supirior than other creatures. We are very intelligence creature, if we get or heard some statment, than we should not follow it blindly it might be wrong. We should think by ourself what is our opinion abot any statment which we recieve by anyone, might they were politiciaon, MLA, PM, or our teachers.

Your teacher might be wrong think by youself.

In this modern world T.V media, and politicians spreding wrong things and spreding lies to get vote of peoples and win elections. So we can't blindly trust anyone.
Here i atteched my blog on thinking skill workshop of milan pandya sir, who is creaticle writer and thinker.

And i embeded a video of ravish kumar on fake news

To conclude i could say that " post truth" is a situation of this modern time people, so we shoul go through about truth, search what is truth. Don't blindly trust anyone. In india most of politicions, government servents gave lie statment and emotional statment to get vote of peoples and also shows their powe to control people. So we should go through all that kind of things which is related to us and what is truth about it.

Thank you.
