SR Workshop - Photography Learning Outcome

"Imagination - an art of seeing"

Photography workshop by Kaushik Ghelani

This blog is written as a Sunday reading task assigned by H.O.D. Dilip Barad sir.

On 17 august we had a photography workshop by renowned Kaushik Ghelani sir, in this fascinating workshop we learnt many things regarding photography. We got to know about various techniques and rules in photography, in this particular blog i am going to briefly discuss this whole event.

This event is divided into two parts. First part started from 12:00 to 2:00, from 2:00 to 3:00 we had a break and the second part started 3:00 to 5:00.

Trushali  Dodiya anchored this event. This event started with University prayer, and then one of our juniors welcomed Kaushik sur with a flower bouquet, after that an interesting Introduction of Kaushik sir given by Avni Jani.

Good noon to you all.

Distinguished faculty, dear juniors, and esteemed guests.

I am delighted to introduce the immensely talented individual, Mr. Kaushik Ghelani, to all of you.

Mr. Kaushik Ghelani is a columnist at Mumbai Samachar. He is involved in producing wildlife films for various government departments and working on wildlife documentation for multiple assignments within these departments. He is a wildlife filmmaker and photographer by profession. Additionally, he writes a column about travel titled "Travel Story" in Mumbai Samachar.

Among his numerous achievements, he has notably published a special story for International Tiger's Day in Hindustan Times and his images are set to appear in the upcoming WWF Calendar for 2024. He also had a lion's special story published in the March-April 2022 edition of National Geographic Magazine.

After Avni Jani's beautiful speech  H.O.D   respected Dilip Barad sir delivered a few words for our chief guest, renowned photographer Kaushik Ghelani sir.

First session

In the first session Kaushik sir introduced a few techniques and rules of photography and shared his experience. He shared many interesting stories with us.

Here are some rules-

Rule of 3rd

The rule of thirds is a composition guideline that places your subject in the left or right third of an image, leaving the other two thirds more open. While there are other forms of composition, the rule of thirds generally leads to compelling and well-composed shots.

Golden Point

The golden ratio is a guide to where to place a subject like a tree, person, building, etc, or element in a photo (like the horizon where it will be most pleasing to the eye. That divine ratio is 1.618:1.

Center focus Rule

A center position, rather than the rule of thirds, is more suitable for enhancing symmetry because you add the symmetry of the composition to one of the subjects

Symmetry

In photography symmetry appears when parts of your composition mirror other parts. It is created when two halves of your scene look the same and balance each other out. Symmetry defines something being clean, proportional and balanced and will make pictures appear neat, tidy and clinical.

Geometric Shade

Geometric photography focuses on the geometric lines, shapes, and patterns that exist in the world. While geometric images are often found in architectural photography, the subject matter can be anything from vast cityscapes to patterns in nature.

leading Lines

Leading lines are a compositional technique where human-made or natural lines lead the viewer's eyes through a photograph to the subject or the heart of the image.

Head /Leading room.

Lead Room - The horizontal space in front of the subject, between the tip of their nose and the left or right edge of the frame. This is also known as Nose Room, Looking Room, or Walking Room. Most times, the extra space should be in front of your subject in the direction they are facing or moving.

Depth of field

Depth of field (DoF) is the distance between the nearest and furthest elements in a scene that appear to be "acceptably sharp" in an image. The distance between the camera and the first element that is considered to be acceptably sharp is called DoF near limit.

Break the rule

breaking the rule of thirds will allow you to emphasize the symmetry and create a very in-your-face shot. Second, you can break the rule of thirds if you're after more empty, atmospheric images.

Kaushik sir delivered one line that -

"Photography is always about learning" - Kaushik Ghelani

We take one hour break between 2:30 to 3:30, in that break we were assigned to take at least five photos and showcase them in the next session.

Second session

Session 2 started at 3:30, in this session kaushik sir remarked and analyzed our photos, and gave some tips to follow. This session was very interesting and knowledgeable. At the end Bhumiba Gohil and Dhatri parmar, Hetal Pathak shared their valuable experience, and I gave a vote of thanks. In this event students from the life science department joined us and gave their enthusiastic presence.

What do we learn from this event?

  • Find interesting, and exciting  things in photos

  • Capture stories, the photo that you have captured must have stories.

  • Capture realistic photos, don't use vibrant filters which seem unreal.

Thank You.✨
