About the poem
The poem "The Old woman" is very small and realistic in nature. It's real and naturel to see beauty in young woman, but it is very difficult to describe the beauty of old woman. It is great imagination by Campbell to see that beauty in old age.
In the first stanza poet compares the old lady with a white candle. As white candle gives light and guided the person who comes there in holy place. The poet compared her face with the light of a candle, as it shine like candle. She guides others by the true experience of her life.
In the second stanza old women's life of wide experiences is compared with the radiance of the winter sun. The poet used the word"spent radiance " for the winter sun. Poet compared traveling life of the lady with it very naturaly. In the last stanza, the poet compared her maturity and steadiness with the still water of ruined mill. She is so matured that brooding goes out from her thoughts, speech and behavior.
Thank you.
